Bulls shrug off predictions of Cavaliers sweep

He has read the ominous predictions that the Cleveland Cavaliers will sweep the Bulls 3-0 in the best-of-five first-round series that starts tonight in the Coliseum. He accepts the challenge. “A lot of our effectiveness to do those things will depend on how well we are. We have Craig Hodges coming off his injury (strained left Achilles tendon). We have Scottie Pippen, who didn’t practice (for three days) because of his sore shoulder. We have other guys playing with various injuries. Hopefully, we will all be fit enough to put forth a good solid effort.” Hodges is the Bulls’ three-point threat [Doug Collins] is hoping will extend the Cavalier defense. He resumed practicing after missing 13 of the last 14 games. He was starting before being getting injured.

Three find varied success in comeback tries

Hawkin’ the goods: He’s got the tools, but they’ve been locked in a box for [Jeff Hawkins] in 1989. A 6-4 right-hander, Hawkins has a strong fastball and a curve that he likes to use as a surprise first pitch. He gets it over, too. Hawkins showed it for the first time this year on Wednesday, when he held Irvine to three hits in 6-plus innings in his first appearance as a pitcher. Coach Ron Drake had been dying to throw him, but an inflammed tendon in Hawkins’ right shoulder limited him to playing first base. After three innings, Hawkins and the Diablos were winning, 2-1. Drake waited for a sign that Hawkins should be taken out, but it didn’t materialize until the seventh, when he walked the first batter.

Agassi sweeps aside Noah in straight sets to make Atlanta final Series: tennis

ATLANTA – Andre Agassi beat Yannick Noah 6-2, 6-2 Saturday in a semifinal match of the $40,000 AT&T Challenge exhibition tennis tournament. The match at the Horseshoe Bend Country Club lasted 54 minutes, as Agassi took advantage of Noah’s injured right Achilles’ tendon. Agassi’s penetrating baseline game proved too much for Noah, who served eight aces. “It’s not like I can just win on one leg, especially against a player like (Agassi),“ Noah said. “If I’m not running 100 percent, then my game is not as good, I can’t hit the ball well, and my concentration is off.“

Celtics Journal Bird not likely to play Tuesday

Sure, DR. ARNOLD SCHELLER, the Celtics team physician and one of the two surgeons who operated on Bird’s Achilles tendons last November, said Friday that [LARRY BIRD] is feeling much better, that he can play on his right foot without discomfort now. [JOHN SALLEY] was 7 for 9 for 15 points, rodman 4 for 4 for 10. [DENNIS RODMAN] even made both of his free throws. Salley also had 7 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. “We didn’t seem to be quite as deep,” Boston coach JIMMY RODGERS said. “They run a lot of people at you. [VINNIE JOHNSON] is a key guy, and with the Rodman-Salley combination with [JAMES EDWARDS], they’re deep.”

Cavs try to make Bulls pay Price

A 95-88 Friday night victory by the Bulls cost the Cavaliers their homecourt advantage in the best-of-five series. The Bulls now can win the series in Chicago, where the third and, if necessary, fourth games are scheduled. The biggest plus for the Bulls was the return of veteran guard Craig Hodges, whose 15 points – including three three-pointers – helped open up the Cavaliers’ defense and let [Michael Jordan] and Scottie Pippen (22 points) drive to the basket. Pippen also shot 4-for-4 from three-point range. Suffering from a strained left Achilles tendon, Hodges had missed 13 of the Bulls’ last 14 regular-season games. Hodges – who still is not 100 percent either – probably will guard [Mark Price] today.
